There are no feature gates: the mail client, AI triage, ticketing, Telegram bot, knowledge base and Shopify actions are identical on both plans. The plans only differ in how AI compute is paid for.
How usage is metered on the Free plan
Each AI operation — triaging an email, drafting a reply, asking a clarification, extracting knowledge — consumes tokens at your chosen provider (OpenAI or Anthropic). supportif.ai records the provider's exact cost for those tokens and adds a 30% markup. Once per billing cycle, the total is reported to Shopify Usage Billing and appears as a line item on your regular Shopify invoice. No credit card with us, no separate payment provider — Shopify handles everything.
Using a local LLM? Then there is no provider cost and nothing to mark up: local inference is free on both plans, forever.
The spending cap
When you select the Free plan, Shopify asks you to approve a usage cap — the maximum amount that can be charged per billing cycle. This is your hard safety net:
- Approaching the cap, you're notified in the app (and via Telegram if connected).
- At the cap, AI processing pauses. No email is lost — everything keeps arriving and is queued; only the AI stops consuming paid usage.
- Raising the cap takes one click through Shopify's standard approval dialog, and processing resumes immediately.
Pro and BYOK — when it pays off
On Pro, you paste your own OpenAI and/or Anthropic API keys into Settings → AI → API keys. From that moment, all AI calls run directly against your provider accounts at raw rates. You pay us a flat $99/month and your provider whatever you actually consume — with your rate limits and any negotiated discounts applied.
Break-even rule of thumb: if your monthly markup on the Free plan (30% of provider cost) would exceed $99 — i.e. your raw AI cost exceeds roughly $330/month — Pro is cheaper. Below that, Free wins. The app shows your current usage anytime under Settings → Billing, so you can decide with real numbers.
Your keys are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM and only decrypted in memory to perform your calls.
Switching, downgrading, cancelling
- Upgrade to Pro — effective immediately; usage fees stop for new AI calls the moment your keys are active.
- Downgrade to Free — effective at the end of the billing cycle, following Shopify's standard proration rules.
- Cancel — uninstall the app from your Shopify admin. Billing ends per Shopify's rules and your data is removed according to the retention policy.
Plan changes never touch your data: mailboxes, tickets, knowledge base and settings survive every switch.
